Dr. Obote Deserves Credit For Promoting Girl Child Education In Uganda – Miria Kalule Obote

Miria Kalule Obote, the widow to the first official Prime Minister and political President of Uganda, Dr Apollo Milton Obote, has come out to say that her husband deserves credit for promoting girl child education in Uganda.

Oftentimes, the victor in any battle always writes the history that is read years and years later. This majorly points out the evils done by the opposing force and the good is most times shunned.

This seems the case with Obote as despite the good that he did, most things written about him are shortcomings. Luckily for him, his wife is still alive to tell his tale which she partly did during an interview with NBS TV.

Miria Kalule Obote said that Obote made a special effort to educate the girl child and he, therefore, deserves credit for that. The schools that existed then were expanded to accommodate more learners.

She further listed some of the schools that were built during Obote’s tenure as president.

Besides, the UPC founder was passionate about fighting against ignorance, poverty, and diseases.

“Obote was passionate about education and health. He was fighting against poverty, ignorance, and diseases. In education, he expanded education for girls, they had to build special schools for girls in different areas like Nabisunsa, Tororo girls, and Bweranyangyi girls.

The schools that existed already like Buddo and Gayaza were expanded to accommodate more students. Obote made a special effort at the time to educate the girl children. He deserves credit for it…”

Furthermore, she said that Dr. Obote built 22 hospitals in the country. And if she was in charge right now, she would make sure to expand these hospitals. This would enable the nearby health centers to support them.

Most history books have always painted Obote as a ruthless dictator who barely did anything positive for Uganda. Nepotism, tribalism, corruption, and favoritism are some of the traits that have been attributed to Obote.

However, it’s from his era that some of the most elite women in leadership currently sprouted.
