The attack involved an unidentified drone that flew into the building located in the western part of Moscow at around midnight local time.
The drone crashed into the building, setting off a small fire on the roof before it was quickly extinguished by firefighters. Nobody was injured in the incident.
The Investigative Committee of Russia, which is responsible for investigating major crimes, said it has opened a criminal case on charges of attempted murder for the act of terrorism.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the incident takes the investigations into “unprecedented territory.” He added that “authorities are doing everything possible to establish who is behind this drone attack.”
Meanwhile officials have not said which office building was targeted or identified any possible suspects or motives.
Several local media outlets initially reported that the target might have been the headquarters of Russia’s primary state-run broadcaster, but this has not been confirmed.
The drone attack comes at a time of heightened security concerns in Moscow and elsewhere in Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Russia has stepped up security at government facilities and key infrastructure since the start of what it calls its “special military operation”.
