He said this at a public-private dialogue on the impact of the EAC integration on investments and job creation. The Private Sector Foundation of Uganda (PSFU) organized the dialogue.
According to Lakuma, all member states of the EAC have a youth unemployment problem. Furthermore, he revealed that there are about 120million youth without jobs between the age of 15-30 in the region.
“Between 60-80 million persons are unemployed in the region. This is a policy challenge for the region. We need to create up to 120 million jobs. It is very unsurmountable but possible. These youth are at the best stage of their years and they need to be working,” Lakuma said.
He also noted that the private sector has grown and accounts for 60% of the activities in the East African region.
Additionally, he said that the industrial sector, which could create jobs, has grown at a slower pace. Apparently, the Covid-19 pandemic made the employment situation worse through massive job losses.
A number of people said many things, but experts called for the elimination of non-tariff barriers that are making the logistics industry costly and dragging the region backward.
