“The EC has suspended campaign meetings in districts/cities categorised by Ministry of Health as having high spread of Covid19. From 26/12/20, no campaign meetings will be held in Mbarara, Kabarole, Luwero, Kasese, Masaka, Wakiso, Kabarole, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo, Kampala & Tororo.” Paul Bukenya tweeted.
This is with immediate effect and as early as today. It is not yet clear if there is another arrangement by the electoral commission for candidates to reach their supporters. This is going to have a very great impact on the elections that are just three weeks away. Their point is valid but the gravity is too much given that things are already hard enough.
Just a week ago, the members of the Uganda Joint Christian Council requested the electoral commission to postpone elections for three years. Much as the EC didn’t comment about this, looks like things want to head there.
Meanwhile, their actions don’t say so because just today the EC started the process of packaging ballot papers in their boxes and invited all candidates or representatives.
Frankly speaking, the 2021 elections are going to be one of a kind. Every thing revolving around the process keeps getting harder by the day.
Political campaigns first of all are not going as smoothly as many planned.
