The time is nearing for the company to exit its role in Uganda after the latest communication from Government.
Taking to their social media handles, UMEME said that they had received official communication from the government. And this stated that their contract won’t be renewed once it expires in 2025.
The company further revealed that it has a 20-year concession with the government of Uganda. However, this agreement naturally expires on the 30th of March 2025.
It’s against this background that the Government informed UMEME that the contract won’t be renewed. UMEME however revealed that it remains committed to performing the obligations of this agreement for the remaining time frame.
“Umeme has formally received written communication from the Government of the Republic of Uganda, notifying it that the current Concession will continue to run until its natural end in March, 2025 as stipulated in the Concession Agreements after which, there will be no renewal.
The Company remains committed to performing its obligations as per the existing Concession Agreements. And will continue to operate & maintain the electricity distribution system in line with prudent utility practice to ensure continued service delivery through to the end of the Concession.”
UMEME’s time in Uganda is one that has been of mixed opinions. Whereas some can commend it, it’s undoubted that the majority loathed the company because of the nature of its services.
