Essential Workers Without Electronic Travel Permits To Be Banned
A car stops in front of a roadblock in Kampala, Uganda. The government has imposed restrictions on transportation as part of its effort to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

Essential Workers Without Electronic Travel Permits To Be Banned

Unlike last year, when stickers were printed and placed on the vehicle, the ministry is this time around issuing electronic travel permits. Therefore, the essential workers without the electronic permits issued by the Ministry of Health will not be allowed on roads today.

Mr. Anderson Burora, the Nakawa deputy RDC said that most of the essential workers who applied for the permits have been approved. He said this while addressing journalists on Sunday and said these will be the only ones allowed on the roads. On top of that, those who received this special permission were warned to observe the curfew time.

The president recently pulled the curfew time from 9:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The only categories allowed to move beyond curfew times include the media, health workers, and security personnel.

‘’Now that the Ministry of Works has issued clearances to certain cars, we wanted to make some clearances on those cars. Those with permits will not be exempt from the curfew deadline,’’ Mr. Burora said.

Yesterday, the Kampala RCC, MR. Hussein Hudu told reporters that the enforcement takes effect today. He said that with the new electronic permits, one just presents their particulars to security and their status appears with one message check.

Unlike the first lockdown, these new electronic stickers make the old stickers obsolete and unnecessary. Therefore there will be no need for them henceforth.

Over a million people last week applied for electronic travel permits and many of them are still pending. However, they were told to get temporary ones from the RDC’s office for the time being.
