Most of the patients have mild symptoms and going to hospital may just be a waste of money.
The World Health Organization estimates that at least 80% of the Covid-19 patients have mild or moderate symptoms.
These patients do not require hospitalization since the situation can be managed at home.
However, when you look at most of the homes in Uganda, this is pretty impossible. Most people have two rooms and they are more than four in the house.
The Democratic Party spokesperson, Okoler Opio Lo Amanu, says its really hard to isolate in Ugandan homes. According to him, it’s time for government to come out.
“The other issue is for government to decentralize Covid-19 management by establishing Covid-19 community advisory teams. These will ensure that their communities observe Standard Operating Procedures. They will remind the community members to police each other but in a friendly manner.”
He commented on the way the health system is being overwhelmed. This is due to the increasing number of covid patients.
“Unfortunately, being that Uganda’s health system is sick and sickening, the people continue to lose their lives. This is in a manner faster than what we would experience if we had a robust healthy system,” he said.
The community isolation centers are a very good idea but currently they may not really work out. The government has a lot it is working on and this doesn’t look like one of its priorities.
