The European Medicines Agency will announce later today the results of its investigations. Cases of bleeding, blood clots, and low platelet counts in 30 of the recipients of the vaccine came up a few days after receiving the shot. This caused many European countries to suspend it.
On Tuesday, Emer Cooke, the agency’s head said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the side effects that are experienced afterwards. Nonetheless, she said these side effects are a serious concern and no one should take them lightly.
AstraZeneca said that 17 million people in the UK have received the vaccine and the number of cases reported is lower than expected.
Governments are insisting that they took decisions out of an ‘’abundance of caution’’. And to maintain public confidence in the shot. No matter, many experts have criticized them saying it is essentially political and is likely to cost lives.
‘’Testing without suspension would have been better because of the rarity of the complication. In the third wave, the first vaccinations with AstraZeneca would be lifesavers. I consider this a mistake,’’ Karl Lauterbach, a German epidemiologist said.
