Eyewitnesses recount a harrowing incident where a car-smashed into a crowd gathered for Liverpool FC’s victory parade. Merseyside Police reported numerous pedestrians were struck on Water Street in Liverpool, resulting in dozens of injuries, including two serious cases and 27 hospitalizations.
A 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool was apprehended as the suspected driver.
The BBC reporter Matt Cole narrowly avoided being hit by the car, describing how it swung through the celebratory crowd after the Liverpool bus passed by. He emphasized the chaotic scene, with the car showing no signs of stopping and bystanders attempting to intervene.
Harry Rashid, a parade attendee, witnessed the car accelerating into the crowd, causing devastation and leaving people injured and unconscious. The sudden shift from a joyous atmosphere to one of fear and disbelief was deeply unsettling for everyone present.
Chaos unfolds
Off-duty BBC reporter Dan Ogunshakin shared his experience of the car being surrounded by people before abruptly reversing and then accelerating towards the crowd, causing pandemonium and transforming the festive occasion into a nightmarish ordeal.
Eyewitnesses like Matthew O’Carroll and Mike Maddra described the car’s reckless speed and deliberate actions as it struck pedestrians and incited panic among onlookers. The incident cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a day of celebration, leaving a somber aftermath in its wake.
In Matt Cole’s words, “It missed myself and my family by literally inches.”
Harry Rashid recalled, “It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car… I saw people lying on the ground, people unconscious. It was horrendous. So horrendous.”
Another eye witness Dan Ogunshakin reflected, “What had once been an atmosphere of celebration and joy and happiness suddenly turned into fear and terror and disbelief… It became hell on Earth.”
Mike Maddra expressed, “It has just ruined the day really.”
