Family Feud Unfolds In Kawempe North Constituency By-Election

In Kawempe North constituency, a by-election is currently underway to fill the seat left vacant by the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

At the core of the conflict are Ssegirinya’s relatives, divided in their support for different candidates in the election.

Ssegirinya’s mother, Justine Nakajumba, has thrown her support behind Alex Luwemba, her son’s former political assistant.

Expressing confidence in Luwemba’s ability to carry on her son’s legacy, Nakajumba believes the people of Kawempe North Constituency will not be disappointed in their support for him.

On the other hand, some of Ssegirinya’s widows have shifted their allegiance to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, endorsing candidate Erias Nalukoola. They argue that Nalukoola is better positioned to continue Ssegirinya’s work and legacy.

Family divisions deepen

However, not all of Ssegirinya’s relatives stand behind Nalukoola. His widow, Mariam Nakabuye, has accused Nalukoola of neglecting her late husband during his time of need.

Nakabuye has since aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party and is supporting its candidate Faridah Nambi.

The family rifts have injected a personal element into the by-election, drawing significant attention within Uganda’s political circles.

The election, featuring 10 candidates, is scheduled for Thursday, with Ssegirinya’s relatives engaged in verbal skirmishes, each blaming the other for betraying the late MP’s legacy.
