According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the KMP spokesperson, a complaint from a one Asilat Mbabazi led them to the arrest.
Apparently, a group of thugs lured her into a transaction on a piece of land. This land is located in Mukono District and these thugs possed as the real owners.
The suspects allegedly swindled Shs 55 million on April 14th from Mbabazi. Police identified the five as Ronald Kintuzi Vincent Yiga, Brian Wasswa, Moses Mugalya, and Peter Kasozi.
They face charges of obtaining money through false pretense through the fraudulent sale of land.
Owoyesigyire further revealed that this group of criminals always identifies land that some owners have put on market in a particular area in Mukono. They then forge a national ID, a land title, and a sim card of the real owner of the land.
“In this particular case, documents belonging to one Dr Ahmed Zziwa a Makerere University professor who is the real owner, were forged. The thugs later identify the buyers and if the buyers fail to do due diligence on the owners, they take their money,” he added.
The victims also charged a price lower than the original price hence enticing the unsuspecting buyers into a ‘good deal’.
Owoyesigyire further said that many other victims have reported complaints about the same land fraudsters at the police headquarters.
He also noted that the police has opened investigations into the documents to get those who fabricated them.
