The development caused a sharp escalation of the strike against Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. The strike started back in September. The UAW is appealing to the carmakers to give greater pay and improve new labour agreements.
This is the first in the history of the Union to target the Detroit Three automakers. Collectively, they employ over 140,000 UAW members, at the same time. The union membership represents over 400,000 active workers across different sectors, including hospitals and universities.
Wednesday’s walkout halted production of lucrative pickup trucks. With this, about a fifth of the auto workers have now downed tools. Ford released a statement following the walkout by UAW and called it “grossly irresponsible”.
In annual revenue, Ford’s Kentucky truck plant generates $25bn (£20b). This accounts for a sixth of the company’s global car revenue. The latest walkout is a warning to General Motors and Stellantis, where negotiations with the UAW are ongoing.
It has come at a time of broader labour unrest. It has cast a cloud of uncertainty over an industry that accounts for 3% of the national economy.
