Well, here is an inspiring story of Daniel Mwangi Macharia and his story of courage, determination and overcoming life’s struggles.
Despite his fears, he seized an opportunity to ensure his dreams come true. Now he owns a multi-million supermarket chain and is still expanding.
The multiple businesses owner at one point in his life served as a houseboy. This was after finishing his high school education where he scored poorly.
Mwangi sat down with Lynn Ngugi of Tuko Media to narrate his life story. He said he developed the experience, patience and learned all that was required to start and run a small business.
Growing up, Mwangi was not a sharp student in school despite his father’s efforts to ensure he got the best education. He scored a D- in his KCSE but still never gave up.
After finishing high school education, a determined Mwangi started looking for employment. He knew he stood no chance of joining any university after his father gave up on him.
Where it all started
One day, while attending his neighbour’s funeral, he heard one of the guests who had come from Nairobi inquiring whether she could get a good houseboy from the village.
Mwangi did not hesitate and with only two sets of clothes, he embarked on a journey that he hoped would be the key to his success in life – which actually turned out so.
For three months, he worked as a houseboy, cleaning, cooking and washing. His boss soon asked him to start working in his shop where he earned KSh 4,000 every month.
The employer-provided bedding and food so he would save his earnings. He worked at the shop for about two years before he decided to take another path in life in 2014.
Having quit his job, he moved to Mlolongo and found a mabati house which he used his KSh 25K saving to pay for rent. He used the rest of his savings to help his family.
Life became even tougher with no clear source of income. A friend introduced him to a mechanic and he later started working as a spanner boy. He was later on taken in by an elderly man who offered to train him.
Within no time, he had clients and was making his own income. He once again saved KSh 20,000 and bought an old motorcycle from a friend who was selling his.
Although the motorcycle was making some money, it was not enough to sustain him. So, he decided to do both motorbike riding and boiled eggs at the same time.
Where the turn around happened
In October 2015, he was contacted by his previous employer after she saw him hawking eggs in the streets of Mlolongo and she sold him the shop where he worked before.
He used his savings to buy the stock that was available and before he knew it, the shop was open for business on December 13, 2015.
In 2016, he bought a butchery from his neighbour but towards the end of the same year, his business stalled. The business was not the only thing that Mwangi got from his employer, he also met a beautiful lady. This lady was working at his former employer’s salon. The couple fell in love and later married in 2017.
Knowing what their goal was in life, the newly-married couple forewent their honeymoon. Instead, they used the money meant for the trip to pay for his wife’s hair dressing course at Vera Hair and Beauty College.
She finished in 2018 and they soon welcomed their first child the same year. Things were looking good for the young entrepreneur, he later expanded his shop into a mini-mart and ran a butchery at the same time. He also opened a salon for his wife, had an Mobile Money shop(M-pesa).
Mwangi soon went ahead and started a water bottling business. He says he still has more businesses to set up while helping young people in the society find their footing in life. His story is one of great inspirations, from a houseboy to a multi-million business owner.
