The fire spread rapidly and reached adjacent properties leaving traders and business owners in bad losses.
Mr. Vincent Twesige, the spokesperson for the Rwenzori West Police said the fire destroyed numerous property. This included cars under repairs, the car garages and also kiosks.
On a positive note however, there were no casualties or even fatalities reported.
“It was determined that the fire originated behind the Giraffe View (Tian Bar) wall structure and rapidly advanced towards geighbouring structures,” Mr Twesige said.
The fire also destroyed a wooden cinema video hall (kibanda) along with all its equipment and a wooden electric distribution pole in Fort Portal.
A certain portion of the Tian Lounge and Bar also suffered damages. This prompted the owner, Mr Patrick Kamulindwa to request a thorough investigation into the fire.
An eyewitness said the fire started at around midday in one of the kiosks before it spread to other properties. At the time the fire broke out, the hotel owners were inside preparing meals.
The police and fire brigade responded to the fire although some residents complained about what they saw as a delayed response. Some of the residents even tried to fight the fire before the fire brigade made it to the scene.
