Hosts of the 2024 Olympics, France, has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament after knocking out 2-time winners Argentina off the competition.
However, this game ended up being marred in brawls and clashes at the full-time whistle.
Going into the game, tensions were already high as the two nations had been involved in a race war for the past couple of weeks. Even in other sports disciplines that the Argentines are competing in, they have received hostility with their anthem being booed.
France under Arsenal legend Thierry Henry won the game 1-0 courtesy of a Jean Phillipe Mateta goal in the first half. There was nothing that the South Americans could do to change the result as the game ended 1-0.
As soon as the referee blew the whistle, the French players started the celebrations in front of the Argentine fans. This angered the Argentinean players who right away got involved in scuffles with the Frenchmen.
The coaching staff of the South American team joined the players in this battle and soon the counterparts of the French team joined in trying to calm the situation.
However, the Argentina team directed their anger towards France’s midfielder, Enzo Millot accusing him of provocative gestures towards their fans.
France’s coach Thierry Henry also came out to apologize for his team’s behavior. He also revealed that Millot had received a red card following this scuffle.
“I apologize for the final disturbance. It’s not what I wanted and I couldn’t control it. Enzo Millot received a red card after the match. That’s not helpful. I don’t like this kind of thing. I’m not happy about it,” he said.
France will now play Egypt in the semifinals on 5th August. The African team also knocked Paraguay out of the competition on penalties.
