In the Spain and Morocco game, the North African country took the lead in the first half through a penalty scored by Rahimi.
However, Spain’s Fermin Lopez found the equalizer for the Spaniards in the second half. The Barcelona prodigy found the back of the net after some slick scintillating footwork.
The Spaniards weren’t done as goal scorer Fermin Lopez turned into goal provider for Juanlu in the 86th minute. Spain took the lead and despite attacks from Morocco, they couldn’t change much about the scoreline at the Stade de Marseille.
France Vs Egypt:
In the other semifinal clash that happened later, France took on another North African nation, Egypt. The Pharaohs took the lead in the 62nd minute through Mahmoud Saber.
France looked like they were heading out of the competition. They came close 3 times but hit the woodwork on all those attempts. However, Crystal Palace’s Jean Phillipe Mateta who has been reliable in the tournament brought them level in the 83rd minute.
The game ended 1-1 in the full 90 minutes and the nations headed for extra time. Omar Fayed was red carded in the 108th minute leaving Egypt with 10 men.
Soon France capitalized on this. Mateta adding a second before Michael Olise scored a third. Thierry Henry’s team will now play Spain in the final on Friday 9th. On the other hand, Egypt and Morocco will vie for the bronze medal a day earlier.
This final brings an end to the dominance of South American nations in the tournament. Spain was the last European nation to win a gold medal in 1992. The last 5 editions have been won by Argentina (2), Brazil (2) and Mexico once.
