Frank Lubinga, a 55-year-old individual, has been formally charged with aggravated robbery, marking the beginning of a legal battle in the courts.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has greenlit the trial, citing substantial evidence linking Lubinga to the alleged robbery of Bergevald John Axel, a 23-year-old Swedish national, on May 10, 2024.
Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayiizi has taken the step to commit Lubinga to the High Court for further proceedings at the upcoming court session.
According to official court records, the victim and his companion, Jacob Kempa, were accosted by a perpetrator wielding a metal bar while strolling along Yusuf Lule road in Kampala.
The assailant forcefully took the victim’s bag, which contained valuable possessions, and issued threats when they attempted to give chase.
Witness testimony
A boda-boda rider, acquainted with Frank Lubinga, was present at the scene and identified him as the perpetrator.
Prompt reporting by the victim led to Lubinga’s apprehension by the authorities. An on-site investigation was conducted, including the creation of a detailed sketch map.
The charges against Lubinga include causing grievous harm to the victim during the robbery incident. A medical evaluation confirmed the accused’s mental competence and adult status, with these assessments poised to serve as crucial evidence in the upcoming trial.
