Gambia Eliminates Guinea To Advance To AFCON 2021 Quarter-Finals

AFCON debutants have progressed to the quarter-finals after a 1-0 spirited win over Guinea at the Kouekong Stadium. The match happened on Monday evening.

Musa Barrow scored the all-important goal for the side coached by Tom Sainrfiet. The forward at Italian side Bologna struck in the 71st minute, latching onto Yusupha Bobb’s through ball.

He shrugged off a challenge to slot home inside the left post.

Both sides completed the game a man short following second-half dismissals of Yusupha Njie and Ibrahima Conte.

Guinea’s Conte finished at the back post from Jose Kante’s low cross on the right-hand side in the 77th minute. However, their celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

In stoppage time, Guinea, christened as the National Elephants had a chance to level things through Conte striking the left upright from an acute angle. Moments later, the crossbar denied Morgan Guilavogui.

Conte received his marching orders soon afterward for a second bookable offense as the scorpions held on for a famous victory.

Elsewhere, hosts Cameroon advanced to the quarterfinals as well with a 2-1 victory over 10 man Comoros.

The AFCON 2021 round of 16 continues with two matches on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Senegal will take on Cape Verde at 7 pm before Morocco takes on Malawi.
