The leader of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) Gen Mugisha Muntu has revealed that Gen Museveni doesn’t have the courage to let go of power. According to Muntu, if President Museveni was really courageous, he would have let go in 2004.
This was the first time that the President who assumed the country’s leadership in 1986 amended the Constitution which he was key in breeding.
The President influenced the removal of term limits to allow him run for a third term in office. According to Muntu, that’s when he tainted his legacy. He gave an example of former Presidents such as South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere.
These let go of power when they could be permitted to run for office again. But because they cared more about their countries than themselves, they did what many African leaders have failed to do.
“Gen Museveni doesn’t have the courage to let go of power. If he did, he would have not tampered with the Constitution in 2004. We clearly told him back then in Kyankwanzi to not amend it but he did not listen. He should have learned from the likes of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Nelson Mandela. For instance, Nyerere left power at a time Tanzania didn’t even have term limits. And the country is now stable because of him,” said Muntu.
Additionally, the former UPDF Commander said that the President can manipulate the system in his favor. However, there is always an end to everything.
Muntu also advised his former party FDC on how to solve their crisis. They either go into discussions or hold elections. And if everything fails, separation has never been a bad idea.
