George Nyeko, Former Bank Of Uganda Secretary Dies

Mr George William Nyeko, the former Bank Of Uganda Secretary has died according to an announcement from close family members.

Nyeko retired from his duties at BoU in March 2015 after working for the bank for 32 years. He worked in many different departments where he rose through the ranks as time went on.

According to the announcement from his family, Nyeko died on Saturday June 3, 2023, at International Hospital Kampala. Mr. Sam Otim who is a son to Mr Nyeko, said the late died of Liposarcoma.

Liposarcoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in an individual’s fatty tissue. Apparently, this type of tumor can grow anywhere in the body but the common places include the abdomen, thigh and behind the knee.

Mr. Otim spoke about his late father’s medical journey yesterday and revealed that the condition started in 2018.

They held a vigil at their home in Mutungo and current BoU Secretary, Ms Susan Wasagali Kanyemibwa attended. She said Nyeko gave hope to the hopeless at the Central Bank.

“I stand here to give testimony that I am what I am today partly because of Mr. Nyeko,” she said

Ms Kanyemibwa got appointed designate for 11 months before Mr. Nyeko retired. She told great stories about how he mentored her at Central Bank.

“I worked under him for six years as a director Board Affairs. He supervised and mentored me and threw me in the deep end, saying ‘you will sail,” she said.

Nyeko is survived by his wife Jolly Nyeko and four children; Ken Olara, Sam Otim, Lois Aber Kwikiriza and Eunice Asiimwe Nyote.

I was informed that I needed to have a business with a capital of Shs4m yet my capital was very small.” The chairperson Kisoboka Saving Group in Nawandala Ms. Nakagolo Faith said they were not able to join the program. This is given the many conditions attached. She also asked their woman MP to raise their concerns to the relevant offices. The MP condemned the mode of implementation of the program. She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs. This is especially those who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs.
