Government To Deport Some Refugees Over Coronavirus

The government under the Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Ministry considers cancelling refugee status for some settlers following the continued spread of coronavirus infections and fatalities within refugee camps.

The disaster state minister Mr Echweru Musa said some refugees have got a habit of sneaking back into their originated countries and returning back to Uganda, something he believes could be importing the deadly virus into their settlements.

It is believed that the refugee who died in Hoima District sneaked into DR Congo and back into the Kyangwali camp in Hoima after getting the Covid-19. Our refugee settlements are like our rural villages, adding that we have sensitized refugees about the coronavirus guidelines and we are also considering making it criminal to sneak into their countries and returning to Uganda or even evoking their refugee status,” Minister said.

The Disaster state minister made those comments on Tuesday as he spoke to the journalists about the return of his nomination papers at the NRM party secretariat in Uganda’s capital Kampala.
