On Friday, US Secretary of State, Antony John Blinken announced visa restrictions on those believed to have undermined the country’s democracy. This includes the period of the general elections on January 14 and the campaign period that preceded it.
However, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem said it is so unfortunate that this is happening. Although, he continued to say that foreign interference in matters of the state will not bother them.
‘’It is unfortunate that the US is pushing individuals in Uganda wrongly. Without having real proof beyond doubt that they were the causers of those allegations. The government of Uganda responded to those allegations and we expected the US government and others to have respected our response,’’ Oryem said.
He said it would be wiser for the US government to respect the response from the Ugandan government. Other than just imposing sanctions. This is because the US government is not on the ground to ascertain exactly what transpired.
Oryem claims the US government acted basing on reports from newspapers, pressure from individuals as well as lobbyists. He said it is quite unfortunate but as a government, this does not move or shake them. They are now focussing on fulfilling the mandate Ugandans gave to them.
