Gov’t Releases Shs10b To Human Rights Victims

The Government has released over sh10b as compensation for human rights abuses to a total of 90 victims, raising hope for hundreds of claimants who have been waiting for years.

In July 2020, Solicitor General Francis Atoke told Parliament that the Government was indebted to the tune of sh43b in court awards.

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs issued a notice to the confirmed beneficiaries whose payments have been cleared by the Attorney General (AG).

They are required to submit their bank details to the senior accountant, Yvonne Kabyanga, within 14 days. Other documents required are the chairman’s national identity card, tax identification number and physical address.

The notice indicates that the entitlement of any of the victims who will fail to beat the 14-day deadline will be deferred and will not attract any more interest.

“The Attorney General has received funds and verified the named beneficiaries for payment in relation to human rights court awards for this quarter.  The persons who have been named on the list are requested to submit their personal and bank details to the senior accountant, Yvonne Kabyanga, within 14 days. Otherwise, their payments will be deferred and it will not attract more interest,” the notice reads in part.

They have also advised the claimants not to pay any money to anyone as the Ministry processes their funds.

According to the list issued by the ministry, Mzee Cornelius Kodet Lorika, a wealthy Karimojong landowner and the proprietor of Aero Beach and other businesses, will get the lion’s share with compensation of over sh2.4b.

Kodet’s compensation is followed by that of Lomusian Protected Kraal, whose payment of over sh1.2b has also been approved.

Additionally, according to the same list, John Bosco Olupot, Abbey Higenyi, George Ayera, Ahmed Kateregga, Isaac Wanzige Magoola and Grace Otim will take the least amount ranging between sh100,000 and sh437,000.
