Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, an Independent candidate with ties to the NRM, clinched victory in the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament by-election. Despite facing challenges in the NRM primaries, she emerged victorious in a closely contested election on November 14, 2024.
Securing 50,459 votes (51.4%), Ms. Akifeza outshone her opponents, including former Woman MP Rose Kabagyenyi, who garnered 44,982 votes (45.8%).
The Kisoro District Electoral Returning officer, Mr. Nayebare Daniel, officially declared her the winner in the early hours of Friday, solidifying her position as the new District Woman Representative to Parliament.
In adherence to the Parliamentary Elections Act, Mr. Nayebare announced, “I declare AICIFEZA GRACE NGABIRANO…District Woman Representative to Parliament, Kisoro Electoral District.” The declaration marked a significant moment in Kisoro’s political landscape.
Diverse contenders, definitive outcome
The electoral race also featured candidates from various parties, with opposition figures like Sultan Salim Tana, Juliet Musanase, Aisha Chimpaye, and Meble Ingabire vying for the seat. However, it was Grace Akifeza Ngabirano who emerged as the clear choice of the electorate.
A total of 97,056 votes were cast, with a small fraction—1.1%—returning as invalid. The meticulous tallying process conducted by Mr. Nayebare ensured transparency and accuracy in determining the electorate’s preference.
The vacancy for the Kisoro Woman MP seat arose following the passing of the late Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who served as the area’s esteemed legislator and minister of state for defense.
Grace Akifeza Ngabirano’s victory marks a new chapter in Kisoro’s political narrative, carrying forward the legacy of those who came before her.
