In this season of politics, when everyone is heated up and probably people expect all of us to take sides, it’s hard to stay neutral. However, even with all these journalists and the media at large owe people neutrality.
Social media has been trolling journalists who seem to be quiet and somewhat neutral in this political atmosphere. Samson Kasumba of NBS and Faridah Nakazibwe of NTV have tasted this more. Many people are accusing the two of siding with the government because they don’t seem to condemn the acts of violence in the country.
One thing that viewers perhaps don’t know is that every journalist must never openly side with anyone. This is even more complicated when it comes to journalists in the news sector.
Subjectivity kills the news because then only one side is getting viewership. Nonetheless, journalists owe the public well-researched information but from all sides.
Of course, there are times when all of us as a nation should speak the same voice especially when it comes to human rights. At such times, silence is not an option though at the end of the day it is a right.
