The legislator was arrested in 2021 alongside his fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana. The two were arrested on allegations of murdering and plotting murders of Masaka people during that period.
By the time machete murders were going on, Hon Ssegirinya was even outside the country. He said he was trying to lobby for his people of Kawempe some good items to use.
He returned to the country after he was summoned alongside Allan Ssewanyana through Parliament.
According to Ssegirinya, he thought it was a joke because they were supposed to report to a police station in Masaka and throughout the whole journey he was normal and joking around.
He said he got to know things were serious when he reached Masaka Police station. They found so many security people.
The MP said when they were arrested, he thought it was a joke still and they would be given bail soon. His hopes started wearing thin when it came to a month in prison without being granted bail.
For the 16 months they spent in prison, Ssegirinya’s mother was always in court crying requesting for the release of his son. He said he used to watch all that in prison and it would stress him to the extent of being sick.
“I was so disheartened to see my mother cry when I was in prison to the point of tears. Whenever I would see her I would get sick,” Hon. Ssegirinya
