IGG Beti Kamya Reveals How Much Money Uganda Loses To Corruption Annually

The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Hon Olive Beti Kamya has revealed the amount of money Uganda loses to corruption annually. Appearing on NBS TV’s Frontline program, Kamya said that the country loses to about Shs 10 trillion every year.

Furthermore, she questioned whether the country is fighting the vice with the right strategies. She went ahead to say that the people supposed to fight corruption are the ones benefitting from it. Besides they are the perpetrators.

“The question of corruption is so big. A study revealed that Uganda could be losing UGX 10 trillion to corruption every year. The big picture is, are we fighting corruption with the right strategies? The people supposed to fight corruption are the beneficiaries and perpetrators.”

The former presidential candidate also gave her opinion about the Karamoja iron sheets scandal. This rocked the country a few weeks ago. And according to her, these should leave office but it will depend on what the law says.

Kamya also meanwhile said that if people are properly mobilized, they can cause political action. She pointed out the incidences of the pothole exhibition and the airport.

Additionally, she went ahead to say that “Corruption manifests in many ways. One of them is the abuse of office/authority. There is also bribery, etc. For us, we are out there to eliminate corruption.”

Meanwhile, government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo said that these iron sheets culprits shouldn’t have false hope. This is because they will be dealt with just like as any other dog has its days numbered.
