Increasing Number Of Street Children Upcountry Worry Locals

The increasing number of street children upcountry is worrying local leaders. During the height of covid-19, the government invested in getting street children to orphanages. Since the whole nation was under lockdown, they needed no one lousing on the streets. These children were at a very high risk of getting covid since they didn’t have masks, sanitisers among others.

Local leaders in areas of Gulu, Arua among others have cried out to the government. The street children apparently have poured again like they have never left. The question is, how are these children coming back on the streets? Who is bringing them back on the streets? Why are they coming back? Isn’t it weird that they are escaping from homes to come back to the streets?

What these children need is more than just a home but counselling as well. It’s likely they already have homes but they need money. Most of these children are sent by their parents to get money. So, help should start from their parents, not just the children. Even in Kampala, the street children came back like they never left.

The government should be intentional about this thing. A council or committee can be put up if need be to deal with this. For many years, getting these kids off the street has been on especially KCCA lips. The number just keeps increasing annually. Also, teenage pregnancies should be tamed because they have led to the increase of homeless kids. Otherwise, this will be a problem forever.
