US intelligence officials have recently confirmed that Iran was behind the cyberattack on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. The FBI and other federal agencies stated that Iran’s motive was to sow discord and undermine trust in American democratic institutions.
The Trump campaign accused Iran of hacking its internal communications on August 10th, while Iranian officials denied any involvement. Sources close to the investigation also suspect that Iranian hackers targeted the campaign of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Intelligence officials highlighted that Iranian hackers used social engineering techniques to target individuals with direct access to both political parties’ presidential campaigns.
The hackers utilized spear-phishing emails, designed to appear legitimate to trick recipients into clicking on malicious links.
