Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi lost his life after the helicopter he and other officials were flying in crashed during bad weather in a mountainous and forested region of the nation.
It is further reported that all the occupants of this chopper died including the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
Apparently, there had been a long search for this helicopter which crashed in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. Speculation earlier on had stated that Raisi had survived the crash although this hadn’t been certified.
“Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi is confirmed dead after rescuers reached the crash site. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian is also dead. The discovery came after a long night of searching in freezing conditions. Shortly before the discovery, Iranian Red Crescent Society head Pir-Hossein Kolivand said the situation was “not good.”
According to Reuters, the helicopter was completely burned in the crash. Raisi who has been a former Chief Justice has been in line to replace Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the 85-year-old as the supreme leader of the Middle East nation.
The now former Iranian President was born in Mashhad in northeastern Iran, a religious hub for Shia Muslims. He studied at the Qom seminary and was taught by some prominent scholars including Khamenei.
Raisi has also been wearing a black turban just like Khamenei. This shows that he hails from the lineage of Prophet Muhammad and this holds significance in the Twelver Shia Muslims.
In 2017, he ran for the Presidency against the then President, Hassan Rouhani. He however lost and returned in 2021 winning this time. He has been a vocal critic of the Israeli state and didn’t shy away from expressing his support for Hamas in the Israel-Palestinian war.
