Celebrations on the Gaza streets were heard after the truce began, cars honked, as well as some gunshots being fired in the air. With no alerts sounding in Israel of incoming rockets, the cease-fire appears to be holding in the early hours of Friday.
Egypt brokered the truce which included Gaza’s second-most powerful armed group, Islamic Jihad. The agreement followed mounting international pressure to stem the bloodshed which erupted on May 10. The President of the United States welcomed the deal.
‘’I believe we have a genuine opportunity to make progress and I’m committed to working toward it,’’ President Biden said at the White House.
The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a statement on the matter. It said the cabinet had unanimously accepted the recommendation of all security officials to accept the Egyptian initiative for a mutual cease-fire without pre-conditions.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad also confirmed the ceasefire in statements.
Before Israel officials met on Thursday to approve the ceasefire proposal, rocket fire had continued near the Gaza border. The Israel army had ordered the residents of the area to stay at their homes until further notice.
Shortly after the announcement of the truce, Islamic Jihad boasted about managing to humiliate Israel. The group also vowed to remain the protectors of Palestinians in Jerusalem, holy to both Muslims and Jews.
