It Will Be The Best Eid Gift- NUP Councilor Pleads To Museveni To Release Political Prisoners

Ali Kateregga an NUP councilor from Masaka City has pleaded with President Museveni to release NUP political prisoners. These were arrested during the 2021 general elections.

Kateregga made his request during the swearing in ceremony of the new state Minister of Gender(youth and children affairs), Balaam Barugahara.

Speaking at State House Entebbe, Kateregga said that he’s one of the 5 members who sits on NUP’s executive in Masaka. However, many of these youths were misled by opportunistic politicians. He, therefore, requested the Museveni to release and have them rehabilitated.

Additionally, he said that this will be the biggest Eid gift the President will give to the nation. He then pledged to support Mr Museveni’s government.

Read his plea below;

“Mr President I’m here to humbly request you to look into the matter of releasing all the people who were politically imprisoned. Most of these youths were misled by opportunistic politicians. But I’m here to humbly ask you to release them. Have them rehabilitated and taught to love their country. I myself pledge to support your government because we were being misled. As a member of NUP’s Executive in Masaka, I know that the politicians we followed amount to no good,” Mr Ali Kateregga said.

President Museveni promised him that the matter will be looked into. Those without any capital offenses will then be released. But those who burn tyres, spoil the tarmac roads and such crimes might be released.

Many people have since been applauding this NUP councilor for such a brave move. They pointed out that he’s going to do something that the NUP hierarchy has failed to do in almost four years.

However, there are still some voices who have criticized him saying that he didn’t have to beg.
