Human rights activist and Makerere University professor, Jim Spire Ssentongo has said that it’s still too early to celebrate President Museveni’s directive to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) to launch an investigation into the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
A letter from the President has been circulating on social media stating that he had a meeting with the British High Commissioner in Uganda.
They did not speak a lot but their talk centered around the recent sanctions on the Speaker by the UK. Although the Speaker claimed to have no assets in the UK, Museveni said that a British representative informed him otherwise.
What is drawing Museveni’s curiosity;
The President was informed that Hon Among has houses in the UK. She’s also said to have bank accounts in the UK which she uses to pay her children’s school fees that are studying there.
According to Museveni’s letter, he said that if the Speaker declared these properties in the leadership code, there is no problem with it. However, if she didn’t then hell will break loose for her.
Mr Museveni wondered why a Ugandan moreover of that caliber would choose to invest in a foreign country yet Uganda also still needs such investments. For the bank accounts, Museveni said that he doesn’t see any problem in it, especially if they are to pay for her children’s tuition.
He said that they will demand for more information from the UK Government. The President then directed the IGG to launch an investigation into the allegations.
According to Prof. Jim Spire Ssentongo, it’s too early to celebrate. This is because the letter can take many directions. It should be noted that it was Spire’s social media-led Parliament Exhibition that exposed the Speaker’s dealings.
