Henry Kasacca, a governance and democracy consultant, says it is too early to exaggerate unity among opposition members. According to him, just because Bobi Wine and Besigye met in the same place yesterday means nothing for now.
“It’s too early to say there’s unity in the opposition because Hon. Kyagulanyi has gone to Soroti East to campaign for the FDC candidate.
However, the fact that Bobi Wine is in Soroti shows that he agrees with the values FDC stands for, but every election has its own dynamics.”
Henry Kasacca however says there has been some bit of peace in these campaigns.
“I think there has been some freedom in this electoral process (Soroti City East), the process has been peaceful. And by far, there’s been some restraint from the police. We haven’t had any violence registered despite the crowds.”
“There has been no violence on the side of the people. The Electoral Commission has not been attacked. Both camps are focusing on their numbers and are confident they can win this by-election.”
While in Soroti, Kyagulanyi said he is sure the win will be on the side of the people.
“That is why our struggle must always be a Ugandan struggle. I have rallied the people of Soroti to turn up and vote, but most importantly to guard and defend their vote. I have no doubt in my mind that victory will be on the side of the people,” he said.
Meanwhile NUP Spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyimsaid they have now changed tactics to front unity above anything as a force for change.
Joel said NUP was not at all short of candidates to parade for Soroti but they saw it right to stand with their FDC counterpart. In any case, Ssenyonyi says he is sure of their victory unless otherwise.
