Following the release of Jamaican dancehall singer, Adija Palmer also know as Vybz Kartel, heavy security has been deployed at Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, formerly the General Penitentiary in Kingston.
It should be noted that Vybz Kartel and three of his co-accused friends Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John will be released.
They were arrested in 2011 and convicted in 2014 for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Owens. The Court based on conversations from his Blackberry phone, videos and a discredited witness to convict the group.
However, the Jamaican Court of Appeal on Wednesday concluded that the interest of justice does not require a new trial to be ordered.
This followed an appeal from his lawyers who cited several loopholes in the case. It should be noted that the Summer Time singer had always denied any wrongdoing.
On top of that the Court of Appeal said that there is sufficient evidence that the self-styled World Free boss won’t serve potentially a longer term. This is due to his health and psychological state if a retrial was allowed.
What his defense claimed;
The singer’s defense had severally cited the severe lockdown conditions he’s been in since 2011. Furthermore, they have described his holding as a brick cell with no air circulation, no water, and a bucket for a toilet.
The singer had a sworn medical affidavit in 2023 from his private doctor. This notified authorities that his Grave’s disease and heart condition were getting worse. And that if he did not get surgery soon, it could be fatal.
The Jamaican singer is one of the most loved musicians in the Caribbean country and has a cult-like following. His influence does not only end in Jamaica but also globally.
He has influenced many dancehall musicians and this is news that has already been widely celebrated.
