Artists were in the news a few months ago due to their endless meetings with the Operation Wealth Creation coordinator in Gulu.
Furthermore, both parties reiterated that the aim of these meetings is to better the music industry.
“Janzi Awards is one of the results from the journey to Gulu at Gen. Salim Saleh’s place. The General took time to study music and realized that there’s a lot of content in Uganda but people don’t know it. It is the first of its kind Uganda because it rewards all creatives. The award ceremony caters for all the 9 domains in the creative industry ,” Phina said.
One of the founders of these awards, singer Sewa Sewa revealed that he came up with these awards.
He further said he got to meet Gen Salim Saleh and sold the idea to him.
“Janzi Awards was named after an instrument that I invented called ‘Janzi’. I had to first work with ‘adungu’ and see what I could come out with. The uniqueness of this instrument is the fact that it’s tuned into two scales. I have friends who are close to General Salim Saleh and felt that I should present the ‘Janzi’ instrument to him. I went and spent 2 months in Gulu and presented it to him, and I think the General had a vision for the instrument,” Sewa Sewa said.
The awards which are in their inaugural year were launched last week at Sheraton hotel. The eventual winners will be announced on December 11-12 2021 at Kololo Independence Grounds.
They also divided the awards into nine categories. These include Music, Performing Arts, Collecting Societies, Film and Video, Visual Arts and Crafts, Books and Publishing, Software and Innovations, Cultural and National Heritage, Support Services.
