Barcelona’s French defender Jules Kounde has added his voice onto the growing voices of other footballers about being overplayed. A number of players have in the past few years come out to express their dissatisfaction about the many games they are forced to play.
It should be noted that a football calendar as per the European model which is the most followed globally has the leagues which run from August to May. In between, there are international breaks on four occasions where these footballers go to represent their respective nations.
There are also other domestic competitions such as the FA Cup/Carabao Cup in the case of England. There is also the club World Cup in case a club won the Champions League in their continent.
Besides, the UEFA Champions League format which kicked off this week added extra matches making it more difficult for the players.
Roughly an elite club participating in all competitions might compete in more than 6o games in a space of 10 months.
What the effect is to players.
Footballers therefore feel that this is taking a toll on their physical and mental well-being. Players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Bernado Silva, Rodri, Alisson Becker have all come out to express their disappointment.
According to Jules Kounde, they might be forced to strike in future and refuse to play. This is because their voice is not heard and nobody even consults them before upending these new rules.
“Every year we have more games and less rest. We players have been saying this for 3-4 years now but nobody pays attention to us. The time will come when we will have to go on strike to make ourselves heard, as Rodri said,” said Kounde.
