Donald Trump has revealed his decision to appoint Karoline Leavitt, his campaign spokeswoman, as the White House press secretary in his upcoming administration. At just 27 years old, Leavitt will make history as the youngest person to hold this position in the United States.
In a statement, Trump expressed his confidence in Leavitt’s capabilities, highlighting her experience as a former congressional candidate and her time in the press office during his first administration.
He believes she will “excel at the podium” and effectively communicate their message to the American people as they work to “Make America Great Again.” Trump described Leavitt as “smart, tough, and a highly effective communicator.”
Hailing from New Hampshire, Leavitt studied communications and political science at Saint Anselm College, a Catholic institution in her home state.
While still a student, she interned at Fox News and in the Trump White House press office, experiences that she credits with shaping her desire to pursue a career in press relations. In an interview with Politico, she noted that these internships provided her with her “first glimpse into the world of press.”
Professional journey in the Trump administration
After graduating in 2019, Leavitt joined the Trump White House, initially as a presidential writer and later as assistant press secretary.
Her campaign website from 2022 highlighted her role in preparing Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany for high-pressure briefings and her efforts to challenge what she described as a biased mainstream media.
Following her time in the White House, Leavitt became the communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik, a prominent Republican congresswoman nominated by Trump to serve as the United Nations ambassador.
She left this role to run for Congress, securing the Republican nomination for New Hampshire’s first congressional district in 2022, although she ultimately lost to Democrat Chris Pappas in the general election.
Alignment with Trump’s policies
Throughout her campaign, Leavitt’s policy positions reflected many of Trump’s priorities. She advocated for tax cuts and pro-growth market policies while presenting herself as a staunch supporter of law enforcement and border security, emphasizing a “zero tolerance” stance on illegal immigration and a commitment to completing the border wall.
In January 2024, Karoline Leavitt joined Trump’s third presidential campaign as the press secretary. Now, as she prepares to step into the role of the youngest White House press secretary in history, she surpasses Ron Ziegler, who was appointed by Richard Nixon at the age of 29 in 1969.
Leavitt’s upcoming presence behind the iconic podium in the White House briefing room is highly anticipated. This space has been the site of many intense interactions between the press and officials during Trump’s first term, which saw multiple press secretaries, including Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephanie Grisham, and Kayleigh McEnany.
After their departures, Sanders became the governor of Arkansas, Grisham resigned following the January 6 Capitol riot and has since criticized Trump, while McEnany continues to support him as a Fox News personality.
