Kassanda Policeman Shot By Armed Robbers

Police in Kassanda District are investigating circumstances under which armed robbers shot and killed a policeman. The incident happened on Monday evening when the victim tried to stop the robbers who had just robbed a mobile money shop.

The deceased policeman, identified as CPL Olaya Joseph (NO. 52590) was attached to Kiganda Police Station in the central Ugandan district. He apparently died after being shot by the suspects whom police tried to pursue after the robbery incident.

The incident happened at Kyakitanga Village Manyogaseka Subcounty in the Kassanda District at around 5:40 pm.

Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Rachael Kawala said the suspects were three wielding guns on a motorcycle.

They apparently stormed the mobile money shop belonging to a businessman identified as Javier Fils Kalongo. The robbers stole property worth an unidentified amount of money before making their getaway.

“…on June 19, 2023, at around 5:40 pm, three armed robbers entered a mobile money agent shop/soda depot owned by Bonani Janvier Fils in Kalongo, Mubende District. The robbers stole various items of unidentified value and fled the scene on a motorcycle.,” said Ms Kawala.

She explained that when they received the information, the police immediately begun their pursuit during which CPL. Oloya got shot. He eventually succumbed to his injuries during transportation to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.

“Our task teams, led by the district Police commander (DPC) of Kassanda, have visited the scene of the crime and recorded relevant statements to aid in the ongoing investigations,” Ms Kawala said.

She added that a motorcycle Reg.UDX 755C Bajaj Boxer Red in Color belonging to the suspects has been recovered.

She assured the public that task teams are on ground doing everything and anything necessary to arrest the robbers.
