The 2024–2025 Uganda Premier League season began with KCCA FC defeating URA 1-0 under the floodlights. A respectable crowd of supporters watched Saidi Mayanja’s drive in the first half of the match to seal the victory for Abdallah Mubiru’s team at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, Kampala.
With the first corner kick coming in less than four minutes into the game, the visitors got off to an incredible start.
Etienne Katenga ran on the right wing to provide a beautiful cross-in, and midfielder Joel Sserunjogi’s shot was blocked as KCCA quickly counterattacked.
Shortly before, URA midfielder Norman Namanya received a warning for unsportsmanlike behavior from FIFA female referee Shamira Nabadda. Left-back James Mubezi fully recovered from an early knock to soldier on.
Moving forward in the thirteenth minute, URA shot stopper Derrick Ochan denied Derrick Nsibambi with a well-glanced header. This was before the former struck the rebound on the side netting.
Hassan Muhamud hauled down a free-dribbling Godfrey Ssekibengo, giving URA a 35-yard free-kick with which to shoot straight at the opponent’s goal. The evening’s URA captain, Joshua Lubwama, curled over the ensuing free-kick.
Before the game’s first cooling-down period, Namanya took a shot with his weaker left foot that was well off goal in the 25th minute.
At the half-hour mark, Saidi Mayanja lit up the stadium with a fantastic curl past goalie Ochan. This signaled the start of play again. And despite the end-to-end action-packed encounters from both teams, the game ended with a lone strike in KCCA’s favor.
The action resumes today with only one game. New league entrants, Lugazi United will be hosting Kitara FC at 4pm.
