Kenya Is The Leading African Country In Rio Olympics Medal Standings So Far

Kenya is the best ranking African nation in the ongoing Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro so far.[9] The East African nation is currently ranked position 13, having won four gold medals and three silver medals.[3]

3,000 meters steeplechase runner Ezekiel Kemboi won a bronze medal in the final race, but lost it after he was disqualified for stepping off the track in the course of the race.[12]

South Africa is the second best ranked African nation, lying at a distant 32, having won one gold medal,[1] five silver medals and one bronze medal.

Ethiopia stands as the third best ranked African nation,[8] currently at position 41 with one gold medal, 1 silver medal and three bronze medals.

This Rio olympic games are too competitive!

Other African countries that have won medals at the Rio Games are Algeria (61), Egypt (67),[9] and Tunisia (67). Before the games wind up on Sunday however,[7] there is still room for more Africans to clinch medals for their countries.

The United States of America leads the medals chart with 30 gold medals, 32 silver medals and 31 bronze medals.[6] Great Britain lies second with 19 gold medals,[2] 19 silver medals and 12 bronze medals.

The People’s Republic of China takes third place having won 19 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 20 bronze medals.[5]
