Killed: 40 people were killed on Sunday as twin bomb explosions ripped through Baidoa city, in south-western Somalia. The first explosion occurred at a popular restaurant as many people were having evening coffee as usual. A man in his 50’s wearing explosives vest blew himself up in the first attack, reports say. Moments later, the second explosion took place after a car loaded with explosives rammed into a nearby hotel. In total, at least 60 people were left injured.
Somali militant group Al Shabab has claimed responsibility for the explosions. Baidoa, a former al-Shabaab stronghold has been under the control of the Somali government since 2012 when the militants were driven out by Ethiopian troops and Somali government forces.
The al-Qaeda-linked extremists remain dangerous, unpredictable and bold, known for audacious and chilling attacks. Their fighters routinely target the Somali government in Mogadishu. The group has also sought to terrorize neighboring Kenya.
Somalia has been racked by constant war for more than 20 years – its last functioning national government was toppled in 1991.
