Leaders Worried As Sex Workers Storm The Streets Of Mbale Town

The local leaders in Mbale District are in a worrying state after realizing that the streets of Mbale town is increasingly flooded with sex workers of which some of them are single mothers.

At exactly 6pm, Ms Mbabazi Lydia who leaves in her one-roomed rented house in one of the slum areas of Mbale town together with her 3 children goes to a local bar.

Before I used to depart from home at 8:00pm, but these days I leave a bit early and get here at about 6:00pm. Lucky enough, I usually find my customers waiting for me,’Ms Mbabazi says.

Ms Mbabazi Jane and other sex workers have stormed the streets of Mbale town, thus worrying the local leaders.

Newslex Point team explored the area and learnt that some of the hotspots include Nandudu bar, Kigali and dark corners behind Orient and KCB banks.

Other hotspots are located on Central road, Market place, Cathedral avenue, Republic street, North Road Primary School and Manafwa Road.

According to the Municipal deputy speaker, Mr Kawanguzi Yasin, Most prostitutes are from Kenya, West Nile, Western and Northern regions.

We are going to put measures in place to be able to regulate sex workers because won’t allow this dangerous habit to continue uncontrolled. We realized they are everywhere now, we therefore can’t move within town with kids especially from 8pm,’he said.

The Municipal Council spokesperson, Mr Kutosi James blames security guards and Police saying they are the ones fueling this activity because they collect money from these sex workers to allow them continue operating.
