Fans on social media have roasted American news agency TMZ after it published images of singer Liam Payne ’s corpse. The 31-year-old former member of One Direction passed away on Wednesday.
Liam Payne, who joined the group at the age of sixteen through the reality competition show X Factor, passed away after jumping from a third-story balcony at an Argentine hotel.
According to reports, he was vacationing at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. Although the well-known media site is facing criticism for posting a picture of Payne’s body, they were one of the first to report on his passing.
Though the publication eventually took it down, the backlash had already crawled through. TMZ published a cropped image of Payne’s body that only showed the portion of his chest with his tattoos. His fans took to social media to attack TMZ for releasing the image.
“Liam Payne dies at 31 and leaves behind a kid and TMZ casually decides to post pictures of his body (tattoos) to confirm his death… hate it here,” one fan said.
“Every time TMZ stoops lower in their ghoulish excuse for journalism, I’m reminded of Rene Russo’s bone-chilling turn in NIGHTCRAWLER. Especially the scene where she chooses to broadcast the bloodbath of an ongoing crime investigation as it does not, technically, break any laws,” one more fan added.
The singer is alleged to have been under the influence of drugs. The hotel also reported that he had been acting erratically and destroying hotel property.
