This is after he set up a new record following Argentina’s thrashing of Bolivia in the South American World Cup Qualifiers for 2026.
The little magician scored the first goal before setting up Lautaro Martinez for the second one. By the end of the game, Messi was involved in 5 goals after netting a hat-trick and providing two assists. He now has 10 hat-tricks in international football which is the most by any player.
The former Barcelona superstar is also the only player in international football who has the most goals in a few games.
Lionel Messi has made history
So far he has played 189 games for the 2022 World Cup winners and has scored 109 international goals. Additionally, Messi now has 56 assists in international football.
This is the second most for any player in the world. He is just 3 assists away from breaking the record which is held by the US’s Landon Donovan at 58. The American however retired several years ago and therefore this is a record that is in sight for the diminutive attacker.
Speaking after the game, Messi said that he is always excited to play in his home country. This game came at a time when the 37-year-old had taken a year without playing in Argentina.
Out of the 10 games played so far, La Albiceleste leads the pack with 22 points. They are followed by Colombia which has 19 points. Uruguay and Brazil follow suit at 16 points each.
