Local leaders in Kabarole and Bunyangabu districts have cried out to government due to their poor road network. They majorly blamed their bad roads on limited funding to the road sector.
Apparently, this has also crippled service delivery as well as development in the regions.
In an interview this week, the leaders said the road fund budget faced a severe cut. This led to the failure of road maintenance.
A case in point is Bunyangabu which has over 600 kilometers of roads but faced a road funding cut. In the last two quarters of the financial year, it received Shs143 million only.
This happens to be a huge cut from the 2017-2018 budget of Shs1.1 billion. In the years after that, they received shs764 million under the road fund.
This amount is what they agreed upon in the current financial year according to Mr James Ategeka, the Bunyangabu District chairperson. However, he said only Shs143 million had been received.
“As a district, we have been in a big dilemma since this financial year started. We have not worked on any road because the money is little and yet all our roads are in a sorry state. Last financial year, we received only 40 percent of the road fund budget of Shs764 million,” Mr Ategeka said.
He also said that if they are to fully work on all roads, the district will need an extra Shs4 billion. This is mainly because of the nature of soil and terrain.
Because of the nature of the area, some areas are usually cut off from the rest of the district, more so during rainy seasons. There are at times mudslides and collapsed bridges hence affecting government services.
