Mark Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister who held the position for the longest period of time, has resigned due to disagreements over immigration policy having taken office in 2010. He was re-elected three times, in 2012, 2017, and 2021.
Meanwhile during his tenure, he oversaw various economic and social reforms in the country, and was widely credited with steering the Netherlands through the 2008 financial crisis.
However, in recent years, immigration had become a contentious issue in Dutch politics, and Rutte’s government had faced criticism from both the left and the right on its handling of the issue.
The far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) had been particularly vocal in its opposition to the government’s immigration policies, and had gained significant support in recent elections.
In this context, Rutte’s resignation came as a surprise to many.
He announced his decision citing irreconcilable differences with his coalition partners on immigration policy.
His resignation triggered a political crisis in the Netherlands, as the country had to navigate the process of forming a new government amidst political and economic uncertainty.
Ultimately, a new government was formed in October 2021, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte once again, after a period of negotiations and coalition-building.
