Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago Gives An Account Of How Ofwono Opondo Assaulted Him

The lord mayor of Kampala City, Erias Lukwago, has given an account of what transpired between him and the government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo.

The situation escalated between Ofwono Opondo and Lukwago yesterday during the NBS Frontline program. This was in relation to the Soroti City East By-election in which Lukwago accused the NRM of rigging.

Through his Facebook page, Lukwago has explained in full detail what went on. And it’s clear that Ofwono Opondo clearly went at the lord mayor fully charged.

Lukwago said that Opondo attacked him out of the blue. This is after he ran berserk as he had been throwing tantrums. Before the lord mayor knew it, Ofwono had sprung up, charged at him and threatened to evict him from the studios.

Further, Lukwago said that Opondo attempted to draw out a gun. Lukwago then dared him to shoot him but instead he pounced on him amd started to strangle the FDC bigwig.

He pushed his hand into the pocket and around his waist, in a manner that suggested he wanted to draw a pistol at me. I dared him to shoot at me. He instead pounced on my neck and attempted to strangle me. I did not fight back but instead struggled to wriggle out of his grip. He then punched me in the chest and grabbed both my collars of my jacket while huffing and puffing like a cobra,” wrote Lukwago.

It was then that the moderator Charles Mwanguhya and another panelist Winnie Kiiza tried to restrain Ofwono Opondo. They however failed to as Ofwono contined to maul, batter and kick Lukwago in the stomach.

The lord mayor added that being mindful of the law, he chose not to fight back. He rather shielded his face from him. It was at this moment that the Minister of ICT Chris Baryomunsi who had been looking on joined in to stop Ofwono.

The government spokesperson then started threatening Lukwago that he was going to finish him off either in or outside the NBS studios. He started making frantic calls to people Lukwago didn’t know for reinforcement.

However, the DPC of Kiira road police station and Chris Baryomunsi came to Lukwago’s rescue. They made efforts to escort him back home safely and they did.

Lukwago also revealed that he has opened up a criminal case against Ofwono Opondo. He also went to NBS to access the CCTV footage but his attempts are still futile.

The lord mayor said that he will stop at nothing to obtain justice. Besides, civil action will also be pursued in the courts of law in an effort to deal with the impunity in the country according to Lukwago.
