Uruguayan Striker Luis Suarez Announces His Retirement From International Football

Luis Suarez, the Uruguayan striker, declared his retirement from international football on Monday. He is currently 37 years old. The forward, while crying, announced that Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualification match against Paraguay will be his last match with La Celeste.

The match will take place at Estadio Centenario, Uruguay’s main stadium and the site of the 1930 and 1934 FIFA World Cup winners.

“I’ve been thinking about this and analyzing this. I believe this is the right time,” Suarez said on Monday. “I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I’ll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time. That 19-year-old kid is now a veteran player, an older player — however, you want to call it — with an incredible history with the national team and will give his life for the team on Friday.”

The Inter Miami forward’s most recent international match was against Canada in July. This was during the 2024 Copa America third-place play-off.

Suarez gave Uruguay a third-place result with his equalizer in the 92nd minute and his successful penalty kick in the shootout. He was not listed on the game-day roster for Uruguay’s friendly match against Guatemala, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

Previous football record;

He played for Uruguay in nine major competitions. He was was a member of the team that won the Copa America in 2011. At the 2011 Copa America, Luis Suarez scored four goals.

Two of these came in the semi-finals and one in the championship game. He was also named Player of the Tournament as Uruguay won the title for the first time since 1995.

He leaves behind a controversial career in international football but a cult hero in Uruguay. The former Barcelona and Liverpool striker is hugely remembered for blocking out Ghana’s bound goal in the 2020 World Cup in South Africa.

He was sent off and the Black Stars got a penalty but Asamoah Gyan couldn’t convert. Uruguay later progressed to the semifinals denying Ghana the chance to become the first African nation to do so.
