Last week, Erias Lukwago ran to the police after Ofwono Opondo assaulted him on live television. He recorded a statement at Kira Road Police accusing the latter of threatening violence and assault.
The two got involved in a heated argument and the Lord Mayor says that Ofwono Opondo beat him up when the cameras went off.
In his suit filed on Wednesday, Lukwago wants the court to order Ofwono to issue a public apology. He also seeks damages to the tune of Shs 500m for the alleged inhuman and degrading treatment meted out against him by Ofwono Opondo.
“I will leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice. Impunity must stop,” he said.
HISTORY of the incident that happened on NBS
Last week, a debate around the Soroti East by-election won by the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Herbert Ariko saw Mr. Opondo and Mr. Lukwago trade verbal volleys.
Momentarily, Mr. Opondo stood over the Lord Mayor before the show took an impromptu commercial break. After the altercation, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, ICT and National Guidance minister who also happened to be on set of the show described Mr. Ofwono’s actions as unacceptable.
The police consequently summoned Ofwono Opondo to record a statement following the brawl between him and the Lord Mayor. However, the government spokesperson is yet to respond.
